CORE CONCEPT

The fundamental focus is on the "drive leg" - for a right-handed stance, this is the left leg. The goal is to create a 45-degree shin angle and explosively gain ground to close space with the offensive lineman as quickly as possible.

DRILL PROGRESSIONS

The coach presents several drills designed to develop explosive get-offs. Single leg get-offs have defensive ends coiling to create the proper shin angle while defensive tackles lift their back foot and explode from their drive leg. The crash pad drill emphasizes gaining maximum ground in two steps before diving out, reinforcing the concepts of closing space quickly.

AGILE BAG WORK

Placing an agile bag against the drive leg forces players to literally launch off that leg to get over it, developing full extension and explosive power. This can be done as races or individual reps, with the emphasis on leaving the ground and achieving full extension.

GET OFF AND BEND DRILLS

These drills combine the explosive start with the ability to bend around a point. Defensive ends work to a five-yard spot while defensive tackles work to a three-yard cone, then practice bending. The coach emphasizes that linemen rarely rush in straight lines - they must get off and then bend.

RUSH TRACK DRILL

This station-based drill rotates players through three different rush types using pop-up dummies. Players work speed rushes, inside moves, and power rushes in succession, with agile bags keeping their tracks tight and preventing them from getting too wide.

COACHING PHILOSOPHY

The coach stresses that get-off work should be done every single day for consistency. A good get-off is described as the most important skill for a defensive lineman, particularly in pass rush situations.
