FERRIS STATE QB EVERY DAY DRILLS (EDD) SUMMARY
This coaching breakdown covers fundamental quarterback development drills that can be implemented daily to build championship-level mechanics and footwork.
WARM-UP PROGRESSION DRILLS
T-STEPS The foundation drill focusing on weight transition and foot alignment. Quarterbacks point their aim foot directly at the target while creating a "T" shape with the back foot. The drill emphasizes proper shoulder alignment, arm loosening, and follow-through mechanics while transitioning weight from back foot to front foot.
TOWEL THROWS Designed to eliminate elbow swing by placing a rolled towel under the throwing arm. This drill forces quarterbacks to stay within the same throwing plane, creating more power and accuracy while maintaining proper arm mechanics throughout the motion.
OVER THE TOP A stationary drill with both feet on a line, slightly wider than shoulder width. Quarterbacks work on their launch point by pushing the ball back and reaching to the 2:00 position. Key coaching points include staying square to target, getting weight on balls of feet, squeezing glutes, and maintaining elbow above armpit throughout the motion.
ONE FOOT ON LINE Right-handed QBs place right foot on line, left-handed place left foot on line. This drill exaggerates the opposite shoulder rotation to the target while keeping the ball high and preventing cross-body throws. Emphasizes straight up and straight back ball movement from carriage position.
ONE, TWO, THREE THROW An integration drill that combines all previous elements, focusing on weight transition, T-step foot positioning, high release point, and proper follow-through. Used as a "reset" drill between other exercises to reinforce proper mechanics.
FOOTWORK AND POCKET MOVEMENT
THREE-STEP DROP MECHANICS Based on metronome timing: "long, short, short" rhythm. First step is big and straight back (not dropping in bucket), while steps two and three are quick adjustments to set hips and alignment. On timing throws, the ball should be ready to release when the third step hits the ground.
POCKET RESET DRILLS After completing the three-step drop, quarterbacks practice resetting left or right by stepping with the back foot first. This drill maintains proper ball carriage position while adjusting to pocket pressure and movement.
RESET AND PUSH Similar to pocket reset but adds forward movement up in the pocket when depth pressure occurs. Emphasizes maintaining upper body stability and proper ball position while feet adjust to pocket dynamics.
MOVING DRILLS
OVER THE TOP ON THE MOVE Quarterbacks run toward each other while executing the over-the-top throwing motion. This integrates shoulder turn and follow-through mechanics while moving, particularly important for mobile pocket teams and rollout concepts.
QUARTER EAGLES A command-driven drill using directional calls (left, middle, right, middle, push, ball). Quarterbacks execute three-step drops then respond to multiple directional commands before delivering the throw, developing quick decision-making and foot adjustment skills under pressure.
KEY COACHING EMPHASIS THROUGHOUT
- Maintain elbow above armpit at all times
- Keep ball in proper carriage position with minimal upper body movement
- Emphasize shoulder alignment and follow-through on every throw
- Focus on weight distribution and proper foot positioning
- Integrate all mechanics into fluid, one-motion delivery systems
