BALL SECURITY DRILLS

The session opens with two-man and three-man ball security warm-ups. In the three-man version, one player punches at the ball, another attempts to strip it, and the ball carrier protects it while using the off hand as a stiff arm. A rope ball tool is also highlighted as a highly effective training aid for developing proper ball security habits.

STUMBLE BUM / KICKSTAND DRILL

This drill focuses on balance and keeping the ball high and tight at all times. Players work on maintaining their footing after contact, with direct translation shown to game situations — catching in the flat, spinning through contact, getting a hand down to stay upright, and fighting for extra yardage along the sideline.

PASS PROTECTION — SIT AND STRIKE

A leg-saving drill designed to teach offensive linemen and backs to get in, deliver a strike, and get out quickly. The emphasis is on giving the quarterback extra time to throw. Situations covered include matching up against larger defensive tackles, staying low, protecting the inside, and picking up blitzes.

PERIMETER PROTECTION — SHOCK AND DRIVE

Applied to the number one receiver, this drill works on engaging defenders and driving them toward the sideline, mirroring the same technique used in the sit and strike drill.

CONE / FOOTWORK DRILLS — BELIEVE WHAT YOU SEE

Seven-cone cutting drills run at full speed, focused on making defenders miss, getting vertical, and finishing runs. The coach references examples from his time at UTSA and his current program at ECU.

RUN TIMING WITH THE QUARTERBACK

The session closes with backs working on route tracks, landmarks, and timing — understanding where the ball will be and syncing up with the quarterback on run plays.
