OVERVIEW
This video covers how Hardin-Simmons teaches and drills the counter run play, emphasizing a "part to whole" teaching progression — starting with individual techniques before building up to full team reps.
DRILL SETUP
The staff uses PVC pipe "shoots" (chutes) to represent defenders during early fall camp and spring ball before pads are on. The drill runs half-line, allowing both sides to cycle through simultaneously, generating 35–45 reps in a five-minute segment. Shoots are arranged to simulate a kick-out block on the defensive end and a seal block on the linebacker.
COUNTER VARIATIONS
The drill covers multiple counter versions (GH, GT, and others) that may be in the weekly game plan. GT counter features a back block by the center with the guard and tackle pulling, while GH uses different combinations depending on the call.
KEY COACHING POINTS
The offensive line coach emphasizes dipping pad level, widening the base, and accelerating through contact on every rep. Pullers are coached to stay tight to the double team and work as a "curb feeler" through the hole.
KICK VS. LOG TECHNIQUE
The staff teaches a "kick until you can't kick anymore" philosophy. When a kick-out isn't available, pullers transition to a vertical log technique — pressing the defender's hips vertically rather than swinging around and giving up space. The second puller reads the block and seals the linebacker off the log.
DOUBLE TEAM EXECUTION
Down combos are critical to the play's success. The goal is to displace the defensive lineman out of his gap responsibility, staying hip to hip and creating vertical or lateral movement, then working off to the linebacker depending on his scrape speed.
