WING-T SWEEP PLAY BREAKDOWN - 21 AND 29 SERIES
This coaching clinic focuses on teaching the Wing-T sweep plays, specifically the 21 and 29 series. The coach provides detailed blocking assignments, player responsibilities, and coaching points for executing these fundamental running plays.
FORMATION AND NUMBERING SYSTEM
The plays are numbered based on direction - 21 goes to the right (toward the 1-man), while 29 goes to the left (toward the 9-man). The formation shown features a tight end to the left, split end/X receiver to the right, with standard backfield alignment including fullback and halfbacks.
BLOCKING ASSIGNMENTS BY POSITION
The tight end follows "gap down backer" rules, blocking the first man inside his gap, then looking downfield to the adjacent player, and finally to the linebacker. This creates a "train track" blocking path where players step on the down hand of adjacent defenders and stay on that trajectory.
The playside tackle also uses gap down backer rules with a slight adjustment - if there's a nose guard or shade, he must secure that first before elevating to the linebacker level. This helps the center with his blocking responsibilities.
PULLING GUARDS AND BACKFIELD ACTION
The playside guard executes a pull technique (either traditional or skip pull) going two and a half yards deep, then kicks out the first defender past the halfback. The coach teaches both pulling techniques and lets players use whichever they're more comfortable with.
The center has "reach on area" responsibility, securing from gap to gap. The backside guard pulls and walls off penetration, getting flat past the center then gaining depth to avoid getting caught in traffic before reaching the linebacker level.
BACKFIELD EXECUTION
The fullback fakes guard trap up the middle while filling backside A-gap. He aligns six inches off the midline and uses the fake to hold backside defenders. The ball-carrying halfback uses three-step motion, following the backside guard and executing an "L-cut" - threatening outside before planting and cutting vertically upfield at a 90-degree angle.
QUARTERBACK RESPONSIBILITIES
The quarterback maintains the midline, reverse pivots to hide the ball from linebackers, and hands off on his third step. After the handoff, he carries out a waggle fake to keep backside defenders honest and create potential cutback lanes.
KEY COACHING POINTS
The coach emphasizes that halfbacks should get "north and south with shoulders square" rather than trying to bounce plays outside. Running straight ahead with proper body position is more effective than trying to outrun defenders at angles. The timing for the 20-series is to snap the ball when the halfback reaches behind the tackle position.
VIDEO ANALYSIS
The coach shows game film demonstrating proper execution, highlighting successful down blocks, proper pulling techniques, and effective L-cuts by the ball carrier. He notes that fullbacks can use either two-point or three-point stances based on comfort, while halfbacks always use two-point stances.
This comprehensive breakdown provides coaches with the technical details needed to install and teach the Wing-T sweep series effectively, emphasizing proper technique and timing for each position group.
