PUNT PROTECTION NUMBERING SYSTEM AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The protection scheme uses a numbering system from outside-in (1-5) on both right (R) and left (L) sides. Defenders are counted from the widest position inward, with R1-R5 on the right and L1-L5 on the left. Defenders positioned deeper than 5 yards from the line of scrimmage are not included in the count.

RED PROTECTION (RIGHT-SIDE KICK)

Used when the ball is on the middle of the field, right hash, or slightly inside the left upright. Each player has specific number assignments:

• Right side: End (R1), Tackle (R2), Guard (R3), Right Shield (R4), PP (R5)
• Left side: Left Shield (L5), Guard (L4), Tackle (L3), End (L2)
• The snapper and punter are responsible for blocking L1 through the operation

BROWN PROTECTION (FOUR MEN IN A GAP)

Applied when facing four defenders in the A gap. The strategy focuses on keeping defenders off the shield through down blocking. Wings (R1/L1) align wider (3-3.5 yards), and the line blocks twos, threes, and fours, leaving the two fives for the three-man shield to handle.

BLUE PROTECTION (LEFT-SIDE KICK)

The mirror opposite of red protection, used when the ball is on the left upright or left hash. Assignments flip to the left side, with the left end taking L1 through the left shield taking L4, PP taking L5, and the right side handling R5 down to R2.

BLACK PROTECTION (LEFT KICK WITH FOUR IN A GAP)

Functions identically to brown protection but for left-directed kicks. Same blocking principles apply with the ball punted to the left instead of right.

SPECIAL SITUATIONS

Fan call is used when facing two returners - eliminates one defender from assignments and has the PP and both shields handle the three A-gap defenders. Free release is allowed when a defender's demeanor doesn't show rush intent.

POOCH PUNT (UNO RIGHT)

The right end extends out to find the goal line, positioning his heels just in front (not in the end zone). Another player positions in front of the returner, creating a front-and-back bracket to down the ball inside the 5-yard line. Practiced on Thursdays.

TIGHT PUNT PROTECTION

Used in extreme situations (minus 3, minus 2, minus 1 yard lines) with one-foot splits throughout the line. All players drop step and block their gap areas. The PP positions at the 4-yard line ("hills at four") and reminds the punter to stay 18 inches from the back line to avoid a safety from touching the end line on the catch.
