Reduce Fumbles with these Ball Security Techniques and Circuit Drills

BALL SECURITY FUNDAMENTALS

This video focuses on teaching proper ball security techniques using the "chin it" method, which means carrying the football high and tight. The core technique involves four key contact points: the eagle claw (two fingers splitting the top of the ball), palm contact, forearm support, and keeping the ball across the chest with the tip underneath the chin.

BALL SECURITY CIRCUIT TRAINING

Coach Bhonapha demonstrates a comprehensive 5-minute circuit training system with multiple stations that rotate players through different ball security scenarios. The circuit includes approximately 4 stations with players getting about 1.5 minutes of work at each station. All offensive skill position players participate, including quarterbacks, running backs, and tight ends working the same drills.

CIRCUIT DRILL STATIONS

The various stations include jump cuts and speed cuts while maintaining proper ball carry, catching and securing the football before transitioning to contact situations, gauntlet drills with defenders punching at the ball, stiff arm techniques while protecting the ball from blind side tacklers, balance drills for maintaining ball security when stumbling, and distraction drills using tennis balls to test focus while carrying the football.

CONTACT ZONE TECHNIQUE

When entering the contact zone (line of scrimmage or anywhere defenders converge), players must "double" the football by bringing the opposite hand across the surface area of the ball. This doubling technique protects against the "peanut punch" while allowing players to keep their eyes up and maintain forward progress rather than hunching over the ball.

OPEN FIELD AWARENESS

Even in open field situations, players must maintain ball security awareness and keep the football "chinned." The coach emphasizes the danger of blind side tacklers and demonstrates how proper technique prevents fumbles from unexpected contact. Game footage shows these techniques successfully applied in real game situations, including short yardage, red zone, and breakaway scenarios.
