DEFENSIVE ALIGNMENT & STRENGTH CALLS

The coach explains how they set their defense based on offensive strength, using a "Ringo" or "Lucky" call tied to receiver alignment rather than just the tight end. This allows them to position safeties based on preferred matchups regardless of the traditional strength call.

HASH-BASED ALIGNMENT SYSTEM

Rather than reacting to offensive formations, their defense sets pre-snap based on hash marks. This allows players to already be in position when the offense lines up, reducing confusion against up-tempo teams. The "field and bench" terminology dictates where the Jack and Mike linebackers align — they are always paired to the field side together.

PLAYER ROLES & PERSONNEL

The Sam linebacker is a physically imposing, strong-side player. The Jack is the more athletic "jack of all trades" — covering slots, squeezing tight ends, and playing man coverage. The Will is typically the most "plugger" type backer, kept covered up by more athletic teammates. The defense intentionally places its best players on the boundary to counter teams that attack the field numbers.

BASE TECHNIQUE FOR DEFENSIVE LINEMEN

Built around head-up alignments (zero and two fours as base). Linemen use three techniques — edge, go, and blast — all based on reading the offensive lineman's face or butt to determine gap responsibilities, fighting double teams when needed.
