Full video on Glazier Drive: Vandegrift Teaching Gap Runs Technique

Coach Woolley covers fundamental offensive line blocking techniques for gap scheme running plays, focusing on two primary blocks:

DOWN BLOCK TECHNIQUE

Used on the playside of gap schemes like power and counter plays. The goal is to create a wall and disrupt defensive linemen in their gaps. Key coaching points include:

  • Aim first step at the V of the defender's neck (crotch area)
  • Step with the covered-side foot first, then adjust based on defender's reaction
  • Inside hand placement on breastplate (between jersey numbers)
  • Outside hand targets between hip and armpit to stop penetration
  • Must move the defensive lineman to force linebacker adjustments
  • Critical to prevent defensive line penetration that kills gap schemes

TOUGH STEP AND LIFT (COMBO BLOCK)

This is the lead blocker's technique on combination blocks in zone and gap plays. The objective is to prop up the defensive lineman for the trailing offensive lineman:

  • First step is a flat brace step with inside foot
  • Second step is vertical, driving through defender's near number
  • Use forearm flipper to explode upward (only block where this is used)
  • Keep eyes on linebacker while feeling the defensive lineman
  • Trail blocker's job is to secure or take over the defensive lineman
  • Keep opposite arm free to come off onto linebacker

The transcript includes references to practice film showing various linemen executing these techniques with shields and live drills, noting both successful execution and areas for improvement in hand placement and footwork.
