QUICK GAME BREAKDOWN
- Study QB-specific tendencies weekly as each quarterback has unique quick game mechanics
- Some QBs hold ball to ear, others use lazy one-step drops, others fire from hip
- Early week preparation: Show LBs video of what "hot" ball release looks like
- Primary coaching point: LBs must go "flat and fast" to their coverage assignments
- For zone concepts (like Cover 3), LBs play hook drops going to window 2 or 3 based on formation
SCAT PROTECTION KEYS
- Identify difference between scat release (immediate) vs. check release
- LBs must recognize scat looks early in week preparation
- Key technique: Go "flat first" then drop if ball isn't thrown immediately
- Common scat protection plays: mesh, Y-cross/climb routes, spacing concepts
- Adjust technique based on timing (hot reads vs. developing plays)
OTHER QUARTERBACK ACTIONS TO RECOGNIZE
- Play action: Only react to "hard action" that causes LBs to bite
- Ignore "lazy play action" - treat as regular drop back
- For hard play action: Execute "panic drop" with crossfield vision
- Watch for pre-snap indicators like condensed splits
- Regular drop back: Straightforward reads
- Moving pocket: Multiple fitting techniques (situation dependent)
DRILL IMPLEMENTATION
- Basic drill uses "cans" with coach calling formations
- LBs break based on formation or QB vision
- Window assignments vary by alignment and formation
- Coach demonstrates QB mechanics (ball to ear) for recognition
- Drill focuses on burst, speed, and proper angles
SUCCESS FACTORS
- When executed correctly: Forces QB to pull down ball, creates tight windows
- Proper "flat and fast" technique can lead to interceptions or incompletions
- Poor execution (losing ground) allows completions and YAC
- Proper recognition turns LBs into coverage weapons
COACHING POINTS
- For quick game: "Flat and fast" is non-negotiable
- For scat: "Flat first" then adjust based on QB action
- Proper alignment and initial steps are critical
- Recognition skills must be developed through film study
- Winning technique is about anticipation, not just reaction
