OVERVIEW
This coaching session demonstrates "scooch man" coverage technique for defensive backs, which is an off-man coverage variation where the defender starts seven yards off the receiver instead of pressed at the line of scrimmage.
STARTING ALIGNMENT AND POSITIONING
The defender sets up seven yards from the receiver with their outside foot forward, maintaining a square stance with their body positioned outside the receiver's alignment. This alignment provides cushion while maintaining leverage.
THE EVEN AT 10, LOW AT 11 PRINCIPLE
The core concept involves a controlled backpedal ("scooching") where the defender gradually closes distance as the receiver advances downfield. At 10 yards, the defender should be even with the receiver's hip. At 11 yards, the defender transitions to a lower position, ready to break on routes.
HIP READING TECHNIQUE
Defenders must focus their eyes on the receiver's hip that corresponds to their leverage side—not the head, shoulders, or feet. Watching the wrong landmarks leads to getting faked out by receiver moves. The hip provides the most reliable indicator of the receiver's true movement direction.
ROUTE REACTIONS FROM SCOOCH ALIGNMENT
Against outside release vertical routes (fetch/fade routes), defenders must stay on top of the receiver and play back through them to the ball, similar to press corner technique on nine routes. Against inside release routes like digs, defenders can undercut the route once they reach that low position at 11 yards, using the same breaking techniques as press coverage but from the scooch starting point.
