EVOLUTION OF THE RPO SYSTEM

This coach explains how his RPO concept evolved from 2020 to 2022, ultimately combining multiple variations into one comprehensive play. The system started as separate concepts but was streamlined into a single call that gives the quarterback three different options based on defensive alignment.

THE THREE-PLAY CONCEPT

The core system operates as three plays in one:

  1. Skinny Post - When the cornerback has outside leverage
  2. Fade Route - When the cornerback has inside leverage
  3. Grass Route - As a secondary option to stress safeties

The quarterback reads the safety first. If the safety comes down or is flat-footed, he has the green light to throw deep. The receiver then adjusts his route based on the cornerback's leverage - posting up against outside leverage or converting to a fade against inside leverage.

MOTION AND PROTECTION CONCEPTS

The coach emphasizes pairing this system with motion to create additional stress on the defense. When teams try to counter by keeping a safety high, the offense can attack the grass route underneath. If the safety rolls down to cover the grass route, it leaves the skinny post-fade combo in single coverage.

QUARTERBACK DECISION-MAKING

The system includes "KYP" (Know Your Personnel) elements where quarterbacks can take shots when they see favorable matchups, even if the primary read isn't there. Examples show quarterbacks recognizing flat-footed safeties and taking advantage of receiver wins against outside leverage.

COACHING PHILOSOPHY AND IMPLEMENTATION

Rather than using check tempo and multiple play calls, this system allows the coach to call one play that automatically adjusts to defensive coverage. The coach credits his assistants for helping translate his concepts into proper technique and reads for the receivers. He emphasizes transparency with players about why they make certain adjustments rather than just calling separate plays.

COMPLEMENTARY CONCEPTS

The system works alongside the team's vertical passing game, quick game, and play-action concepts. The coach runs similar route combinations in their five-step passing game to maintain consistency and stress the same coverage principles throughout their offense.
