CURL CONCEPT OVERVIEW

This video breaks down a versatile curl concept that provides coaches with a simple, short to intermediate passing option. The play uses a three-step drop and has evolved over recent years to adapt to defensive adjustments.

ROUTE STRUCTURE AND TIMING

The X and Z receivers run climbing curls that break at approximately 7 yards (previously 8-10 yards). The route has been flattened with more of a driving angle to counter how defenses have been attacking it. Slot receivers in 2x2 sets run 1-3 yard climbing arrows.

3X1 FORMATION EXECUTION

In 3x1 sets, the #3 receiver runs a seam route primarily as a clearing pattern. This receiver brackets interior defenders and keeps the safety occupied, rarely catching passes but creating space for the actual targets. The #1 receiver runs the curl while #2 runs the arrow.

QUARTERBACK READS

The quarterback reads the flat defender in a simple one-man read progression. If the flat defender follows the arrow route out, the quarterback replaces with the curl. If the flat defender sinks, the arrow becomes the target.

MAX PROTECTION VARIATION

Against heavy pressure looks, the concept can be run with max protection, converting to a two-man curl by having the wing block instead of running the seam route.

CHOICE ROUTE FLEXIBILITY

The backside receiver in 3x1 formations runs a choice route, providing an additional option. Quarterbacks should work the entire field and not ignore the backside receiver, especially against one-on-one coverage.

WHEEL TAG ADDITION

The concept includes a wheel tag variation where the arrow route converts to a wheel for vertical attack potential. The quarterback reads remain the same - if the wheel is covered, the curl is still available. This creates mismatches and can provide explosive play opportunities.

COACHING POINTS

Emphasizes proper teaching of reads even with tags called. Quarterbacks must avoid fixating on tagged routes and continue reading coverage properly, taking what the defense gives rather than forcing predetermined throws.
